Tumulus

There's a Bronze Age burial mound sitting just outside Sanquhar that most folk driving through Dumfries & Galloway will miss entirely. Tumulus is exactly what it sounds like - an ancient earthwork where someone important was laid to rest thousands of years ago, though these days it's just a grassy hump rising from the landscape.

You won't spend long here. A quick stop, a walk round the perimeter, maybe a photo from the top if the ground's not too boggy. But that's rather the point. This is proper archaeology - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no gift shop. Just you and a chunk of Bronze Age Scotland that's survived since roughly 1500 BC.

It works best if you've got an interest in prehistory or you're doing the rounds of Dumfries & Galloway's older sites. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming unless they're the sort who get excited about "ancient burial place" as a concept. Walkers definitely should take it in if you're exploring the area around Sanquhar - adds a nice layer to understanding the landscape.

The real value here is context. Pair it with a stay at Sunnyside Lodges five miles away and use Tumulus as part of a bigger loop exploring the region's archaeology and history. Go midweek if you want solitude. Bring decent footwear - the ground can be marshy depending on weather.
