Tump Terrett

A proper Iron Age hill fort that most visitors to the Forest of Dean walk straight past without realising. Tump Terrett sits near Lydney with commanding views across the Severn Valley - the kind of place where you can stand and actually feel the weight of two thousand years pressing down on the landscape.

What you're looking at are defensive earthworks and ramparts, the physical remains of where people once lived, fought, and survived. The site itself is modest - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just the lumpy terrain and the ditches that made this settlement defensible. Archaeology enthusiasts will find it genuinely rewarding; the earthworks are clear enough to read the site's layout if you know what you're looking for. Casual walkers might find it less dramatic than, say, an actual stone fortress, but the views make the trek worthwhile.

There's no admission fee because there's nothing formal here - it's one of those sites where you turn up, have a look, and move on. Allow thirty to forty minutes unless you're seriously mapping out the ramparts. Spring and early summer are best; in winter the undergrowth makes the earthworks harder to distinguish.

If you're camped at Forest and Wye Valley or Bracelands, this slots nicely into a morning's walking. It's not the centrepiece of a holiday - you're not driving three hours to see Iron Age ditches - but combined with Lydney's Roman port nearby and the wider Forest walks, it becomes part of something bigger. Honest archaeology, not Instagram archaeology.
