Tullo Braes

The walk up Tullo Braes rewards you with views across the Tay estuary that make the climb entirely worthwhile. It's not particularly high or technically demanding, but it's steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the vista when you reach the top.

What makes this spot special is how it sits between Tayport and the water. The braes themselves are craggy and textured, proper Scottish landscape without any of the Disney version of it. You get the river below, the Fife coast stretching out, and on a clear day enough visibility to make sense of where you are geographically. The path is manageable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness, though it's muddy after rain and the gradient doesn't let up.

Families with older kids will find it engaging - short enough not to trigger complaints, dramatic enough to feel like an actual expedition. Younger children might struggle with the steepness. Walkers stopping off from Tayport Links or Larick Campsite will appreciate it as a cracking afternoon circuit, ideally tackled when the light's decent rather than at the tail end of the day.

Allow about an hour for the full walk, depending on how long you linger at the top taking photographs. There's no café or facilities at the summit, so bring water. Free to access, obviously. It's the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is exactly why it's worth knowing about if you're staying in the area.
