Tugley Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Tugley Wood sits just outside Cranleigh and rewards those who venture in with dense, peaceful forest and the kind of quiet you don't often find in Surrey. The paths wind through mixed woodland - oak, beech, and conifers - and it's the sort of place where you'll actually hear birds rather than road noise.

It's a straightforward forest, no facilities, no visitor centre, just trees and earth underfoot. The woodland isn't massive, so you're looking at an hour's walk at most before you've seen what there is to see. Families with young children might find it a bit lacking in the wow factor - there's no viewpoint, no water feature, no obvious highlight. But if you're after a gentle ramble and need to know you're doing something active whilst staying low-key, this works.

Walkers will appreciate it more than most. The paths are well-trodden and the woodland feel is genuine rather than managed-park artificial. Autumn's the best time - the light through the canopy and the leaf cover make it actually lovely. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic.

Getting there is easy enough from Cranleigh. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Little Cowdray Farm or Firesyde, it's a decent break from sitting on site. Worth a morning, not worth planning a trip around.
