Tudeley Woods

The woods around Tudeley, just outside Tunbridge Wells, offer proper woodland walking without the crowds you'd get at the more famous spots. It's genuinely easy to lose an hour here pottering about on the paths, with enough variety to keep both adults and restless kids occupied. The trees are thick enough that it feels properly wild, even when you're only a few miles from town.

What you're doing is straightforward: walking. There are paths of varying difficulty threading through the woodland, decent for families with older kids but potentially tough going with pushchairs depending on conditions. Spring's when it's best - bluebells and all that - though autumn has its charm too. Summer can be muggy and dense, and winter's fine if you don't mind mud.

The practicalities are refreshingly uncomplicated. There's no entrance fee and no set opening hours, so you can turn up when it suits you. Allow two to three hours if you want a proper walk, or forty minutes for a quick loop. It won't keep toddlers entertained for long, to be honest.

If you're camped at Apple Acres or Glamping at Honnington Farm - both within spitting distance - this is ideal for a half-day adventure that breaks up the holiday routine. It won't blow your mind, but it's solid woodland, cheap, and close enough to Tunbridge Wells that you can combine it with a proper day out if needed. Decent value, straightforward, proper local.
