Tucking Mill Reservoir

A modest reservoir tucked into the Wiltshire countryside near Bradford-on-Avon, Tucking Mill is the sort of place locals know about and visitors often miss. The water sits properly quiet, bordered by trees and fields - it's less dramatic than the grand reservoirs you'd find further north, but that's rather the point. There's a decent walking loop around the perimeter if you've got forty minutes and decent boots, and the bird life is decent enough that you'll spot waterfowl even on a flat day.

The real appeal here is that it doesn't demand much of you. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no entry fee as far as I can tell - you just turn up, park sensibly near the access point, and enjoy the walk. Water stays fairly calm even when the wind picks up elsewhere, which makes it pleasant rather than dramatic. It's the kind of spot that works well if you're camping at Stowford Manor Farm or Widbrook Barns nearby - an easy leg-stretch between breakfast and something else on your itinerary rather than a reason to drive across the county.

Picture-perfect it isn't. The infrastructure is minimal and the views are understated. But if you're already based around Bradford-on-Avon for a few days and fancy a quiet half-hour with no crowds and no ticket prices, it delivers. Families with young walkers will find the flat path manageable. History enthusiasts probably won't find much to grab onto. What you're really after is a proper woodland walk by water - and that, at least, is genuine.
