Tòrr Beag

The walk up Tòrr Beag isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for it. This modest peak sits on the Isle of Arran, a proper island that feels a world away from the Ayrshire mainland despite being within sight of it. The summit itself is nothing fancy - just a cairn and enough space to catch your breath - but the views back across the Firth of Clyde are genuinely worth the effort. The real appeal here is simplicity. No visitor centre, no café, no crowds. You get a straightforward hill walk that takes most people two to three hours return from the nearest car park, with proper views as your reward. It suits fell walkers who want something quick and satisfying rather than a full day out, and families with older kids who don't mind a bit of gradient. Younger children might struggle with the steepness, truth be told.

The Isle of Arran is one of those places where you don't need a packed itinerary - the walking is the point. Bring decent boots, check the forecast, and go early if you want solitude. Free to visit, obviously, since it's a hill. The climb's properly rewarding for the time you'll spend, which counts for something.
