Cnoc a' Choire Mhòir

The walk up Cnoc a' Choire Mhòir isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the views. You're looking at a decent hill walk rather than a casual stroll, the sort where you'll feel your thighs complaining on the way down. From the summit you get proper views across Arran - out to the Firth of Clyde, across to the mainland hills. On a clear day it's worth every huffing step.

This is one for walkers with some fitness rather than families after a gentle afternoon out. You need proper boots and the weather can turn quickly up here, so don't underestimate it just because the height doesn't sound dramatic. The terrain is rough in places and the path isn't always obvious, which adds to the appeal if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Arran's a cracking base for this kind of walk, and staying at one of the nearby parks makes sense. Kings Caves Glamping is closest at 2.5 miles away, or Carradale Bay Holiday Park over at 6 miles if you want something a bit larger. Both give you easy access to the island's walking routes without being right on top of them.

Allow a good three to four hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. Spring and autumn are best - summer brings midges and crowds, winter can make the descent dodgy. Free to walk, obviously. It's the sort of peak that rewards you properly for the effort, rather than one of those Instagram spots that disappoints when you get there.
