Machrie Moor Stone Circle 2

The wind across Machrie Moor can knock you sideways, especially when you're standing among six Bronze Age stone circles that have been here for over 4,000 years. They're arranged across moorland on the Isle of Arran, and there's something properly humbling about it - no visitor centre, no explanatory boards, just weathered rocks and archaeology doing its job.

You get two distinct circles here. The tallest stones reach about 5 metres, though some are fallen or half-buried now. Walking between them takes maybe 20 to 30 minutes if you're leisurely about it, which you should be. The moor itself is windswept and boggy in places, so proper boots matter. There's a small car park near the start of the track, though it's fairly basic.

History enthusiasts will find this rewarding - it's genuinely ancient and underdeveloped compared to more famous circles, which means fewer crowds and a chance to think about what this place meant to Neolithic people. Families with young kids might find it engaging for an hour, though there's not much to do once you've looked around. Walkers should be here - it's a proper moorland experience, and you can extend it into longer hikes across Arran if the weather holds.

It's free, accessible year-round, though winter winds can be fierce. Kings Caves Glamping sits less than a mile away, making it an easy stop if you're staying locally. Go in decent weather if you can - there's nothing to shelter under out there.
