Trostrie Motte

A grassy mound rising sharply from the Scottish landscape near Kirkcudbright, Trostrie Motte is what remains of a Norman fortification built sometime in the 12th century. It's essentially an earth and timber castle - the kind that came before stone keeps became fashionable. What you get is a proper archaeological site: a substantial raised platform with steep sides, the sort of thing you can walk around and clamber up if you're that way inclined.

It won't take long. The whole visit, including a good look around and a climb to the top, runs to maybe thirty minutes. But that's rather the point. This isn't a destination in itself - it's a decent waypoint if you're already exploring the Dumfries and Galloway region, particularly if you're staying at Silver Craigs Campsite or Seaward Holiday Park, both just a few miles away.

Walkers will appreciate it more than most. The motte sits in actual countryside, so you can easily string it together with a longer ramble. History enthusiasts get a tangible sense of how medieval power worked in these borderlands - a quick defensive stronghold, nothing fancy. Kids might find it interesting for ten minutes before the novelty of the hill wears off.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's minimal infrastructure. No visitor centre, no café, no marked paths. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged. Late spring through early autumn works best. It's worth the detour if you're in the area, but don't plan a holiday around it.
