The whole thing feels intimate rather than sprawling; you can work through it in two to three hours without feeling rushed or knackered.

The setup is straightforward. You move through different zones - steamy rainforest sections, reptile houses, aquarium displays - and it's genuinely engaging rather than gimmicky. Younger kids tend to get the most from it, especially those fascinated by creatures they'll never see in the wild. Adults who can't be bothered with a full zoo day find it manageable because there's no trudging across acres of parkland. The temperature is warm and humid year-round, so it works even when Leeds is grey and cold.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Moor Lodge, Glenfield, or Haighfield are all within a few miles - it makes sense as a half-day activity when the weather isn't cooperating.
