Triangular Lodge

Three storeys of oddness rising from a field near Kettering - that's the Triangular Lodge, and it's properly peculiar. Built in the 1590s by Sir Thomas Tresham, this three-sided structure was his way of making a point about the Holy Trinity, which is either profound or completely mad depending on your mood. Everything comes in threes: three floors, three sides, three windows per side. Even the chimneys follow the pattern.

Walking around it takes about twenty minutes, but you'll spend half that time trying to work out what's going on inside your head. The exterior is richly decorated with stonework - Latin inscriptions, geometric patterns, the lot. Inside, the rooms spiral upward with narrow staircases that feel genuinely cramped; you're not getting crowds in here. It's a small space, which works in its favour.

History nerds and architecture types will find plenty to pick at. Families with younger children might get restless fairly quickly - there's not much to do beyond poking about and reading plaques. Photographers absolutely love it, especially in afternoon light when the stone glows.

It's free admission and run by English Heritage, though opening hours vary by season so check ahead. Allow an hour if you're thorough. From Kettering, it's only fifteen minutes south, making it a solid half-day stop alongside the nearby caravan parks like Lakeview or Get Lost In Nature if you're spending a week in the area. Pair it with woodland walks and you've got a proper day sorted.
