Rothwell Gullet

A steep-sided wooded valley that drops away suddenly from the Northamptonshire countryside, Rothwell Gullet catches most visitors off guard. You're walking across fairly ordinary farmland near Kettering, and then the ground simply falls away into this dramatic ravine - all dense woodland, rocky outcrops, and a small stream threading through the bottom.

It's worth the detour if you're into landscape oddities and don't mind a proper scramble. The gullet itself is only a few hundred metres long, but the walk down and back up takes real effort - the paths are steep, muddy when wet, and the sides are crumbly in places. This isn't a gentle stroll; it's more of a geological curiosity that rewards keen walkers and anyone fascinated by how the land shifts and changes. Geologically it's the result of water erosion carving through softer rocks, creating this sudden gouge in the landscape.

You'll want to allow a solid hour for the whole thing, including scrambling about at the bottom. There's limited parking nearby, and it's entirely free - no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. Frankly, it's better as an add-on to a broader countryside walk than a destination in itself.

If you're based at Get Lost In Nature or Moon Valley Glamping Retreat - both excellent sites within six miles - Rothwell Gullet makes a decent morning activity before heading elsewhere. It's the sort of place that satisfies the "what's that on the map" curiosity rather than delivering Instagram moments, but that's precisely why locals rate it.
