Treyford Hill

The South Downs Way passes right through Treyford Hill, and on a clear day you can see why walkers bother with this stretch at all. It's not dramatic - there's no sudden drop or viewpoint cafe - but it's proper downland, the kind of rolling chalk terrain that makes Hampshire feel proper countryside rather than overgrown suburbia.

The hill itself sits between Chichester and the deeper South Downs, so it works as a half-day walk rather than a full expedition. Most people do it as part of a longer route rather than bagging the summit alone. The views sweep across the weald, and on a crisp autumn morning with the light low and golden, it's genuinely lovely. Spring's probably better for wildflowers if you're into that sort of thing.

It's free, obviously - it's a hill. You're looking at a two to three hour walk depending on where you start and whether you've got kids dragging their feet. The ground can be muddy after rain, so proper boots matter. Families will manage it fine, though younger children might find the exposed sections a bit exposed if they're not used to heights.

If you're based at Bow Hill Farm, the caravan site just down the road, Treyford works perfectly as a morning walk before heading into Chichester for lunch. It's also within striking distance of Adhurst Yurts if you want something more adventurous - the combination of walking, landscape, and that kind of outdoor skills setup makes for a proper South Downs break.
