West Dean Gardens

The walled garden at West Dean, just outside Chichester, is one of those places that rewards a proper visit rather than a quick drive-by. Twenty-two acres of Victorian gardens wrapped in a 300-year-old flint wall - it's the sort of spot that makes you understand why some people get genuinely excited about horticulture.

You get the formal bit first: a long pergola, rose gardens in full swing if you time it right, and borders that actually look like someone knows what they're doing. The real knockout is the kitchen garden - working walled gardens are rarer than you'd think, and this one runs serious vegetable plots alongside heritage apple trees. If you've got kids, they'll either love spotting what's growing or get bored within ten minutes. Fair warning.

Allow a good couple of hours if you're the type to read the plant labels. Bring a camera. The grounds slope gently, so it's walkable but not punishing, and there's usually somewhere to sit and have a proper think about life.

It pairs well with a caravan base at Bow Hill Farm or Graffham, both close enough that you're not eating up half the day driving. Pop into Chichester itself afterwards for lunch - the cathedral's decent if gardens aren't your sole interest. West Dean works best in spring or early summer when things are actually flowering rather than dormant.
