Treswell Wood Nature Reserve

Ancient coppiced woodland stretches through 52 acres of proper countryside just outside Retford, where traditional woodland management has created something rather special. Treswell Wood feels like stepping back centuries - the hazel, ash and oak here have been cut and regrown in cycles for generations, creating that distinctive open understory you rarely see these days.

Birdwatchers will have a field day. The varied habitat supports everything from woodpeckers to warblers, while the ride systems (those grassy paths between tree sections) are brilliant for spotting butterflies in summer. Spring brings carpets of bluebells and wood anemones that make the walk genuinely worthwhile.

Families with older children who don't mind proper walking will enjoy the network of footpaths, though it's not buggy-friendly terrain. Allow a couple of hours to do it justice - there's enough variety to keep most people interested, from the working coppice areas to the wetter sections where different plants thrive.

The reserve sits handily close to several holiday parks including Sundown Adventureland and Wild Acre Village, making it a decent countryside contrast if you're staying nearby. Free to access year-round, it's particularly lovely in May when everything's coming into leaf and the dawn chorus is properly spectacular.
