Trentham Park

The lake at Trentham is what draws you in first - a proper expanse of water that catches the light and makes you want to walk the full circuit, even if you've only popped in for twenty minutes. It's a nature reserve wrapped around this old estate near Stafford, and the paths are well-maintained enough that you won't end up squelching through mud unless it's been raining hard.

Walkers get the most from this place. The lake loop takes you past woodland, across open grassland, and through sections where you might spot waterfowl if you're quiet about it. It's not mountainous or dramatic - more of a gentle, restorative sort of walk. Families with younger kids will manage it fine, though there's not a huge amount to keep them entertained beyond throwing sticks in the water. Birdwatchers and photographers will find enough here to justify a visit, especially in spring and autumn when migration happens.

Allow a couple of hours for a proper circuit, or just an hour if you're doing a quick leg-stretch. Free entry is the big draw - you're not paying to access these paths, which makes it feel generous.

If you're staying at Fledgling Farm campsite just down the road, Trentham works as an easy morning walk before breakfast or a late afternoon wander when it's cooler. It won't dominate your holiday plans, but it's exactly the sort of place that stops a camping trip from feeling too stationary.
