Trentham Gardens

The lake at Trentham is what hits you first - a proper ribbon of water stretching across parkland that feels genuinely grand without trying too hard. Capability Brown designed this place in the 1760s, and you can see why he's remembered. The gardens themselves are split between the formal Italian gardens near the house and these wilder, more romantic spaces where you can actually breathe.

It's a solid half-day outing, maybe three hours if you're ambling without rushing. Families do well here because there's enough space that kids aren't climbing the walls after an hour, and the lake walk is flat enough that you won't hear complaints. The woodland areas are proper nice for summer strolls - proper peaceful.

There's a farm shop and café on-site, which is useful if you've come from Stafford and haven't thought lunch through. The estate has its own character without feeling like it's been overstuffed with attractions. Some people find it a bit quiet compared to the big pay-to-enter gardens, but that's exactly the point if you ask me.

If you're camping at Fledgling Farm nearby, it's close enough for a day trip without much of a drive. Worth pencilling in if you're spending a week in Staffordshire, though I'd check current opening times before you head out - the place does things in seasons, and you want to catch it when the gardens are actually open.
