Trent Bridge

The River Trent has shaped Nottinghamshire for centuries, and this Victorian iron bridge is where you'll see it at its most dramatic. Built in 1871, Trent Bridge carries the A6097 across the water just south of Newark - a proper engineering statement in pale stone and wrought iron that still draws admiring glances from anyone paying attention.

It's not a destination that demands hours of your time, but it's worth a stop if you're passing through the area. The bridge itself rewards a closer look - the ironwork is genuinely handsome, and from the riverbank below you get the full effect of the span. The Trent flows broad here, and on a clear day the light catches the water nicely. Bring a camera and a decent pair of boots; the riverbank can get muddy after rain but offers some decent riverside rambles if you're in the mood. Twenty minutes will cover a proper look at the bridge itself. The nearest town is Newark, where you can grab lunch and actually work out why this crossing mattered so much to local history.
