Trench Wood

A proper ancient woodland that's been around since before the Norman Conquest, Trench Wood sits just outside Pershore and feels genuinely removed from the everyday. You're walking through oak and ash trees that have serious age to them, with the woodland floor thick enough to muffle your footsteps most of the year.

It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured park, so expect muddy paths that demand decent boots and a willingness to push past low branches. The main draw is simply the woodland itself - bluebells in spring if you time it right, wildlife year-round if you're patient enough to spot it. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is partly the charm and partly something to know going in.

Walkers will find this genuinely absorbing. Kids under eight might lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're the serious nature-spotting type. History enthusiasts get a kick from the age of it all - this is Saxon-era woodland, which means something if you're into that sort of thing.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent ramble, longer if you're serious about bird-watching. Free to visit. It works well as part of a wider Worcestershire walking route, and if you're based at Bowbrook Lodges nearby, this becomes an easy morning or afternoon sortie into something genuinely old without any tourist machinery around it.
