Tregiffian Burial Chamber

Walking up to Tregiffian on a grey Cornish afternoon, you're struck by how little fanfare surrounds something so old. This is a Neolithic burial chamber - roughly 5,500 years old - sitting in farmland between Penzance and the sea, and it's the sort of place that rewards actually showing up rather than scrolling past.

What you get is a proper dolmen: a wedge-shaped tomb built from massive granite slabs, its capstone still in place after millennia. You can walk right up to it, peer inside at the burial space, and stand where Bronze Age people once gathered to mark their dead. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards explaining it all - just the thing itself and whatever you bring to understanding it.

It's brilliant for archaeology buffs and anyone who gets a genuine thrill from touching stone older than Egypt's pyramids. Kids might manage twenty minutes if they're the exploring type; history-mad teenagers could spend longer pondering how on earth they moved those slabs without wheels. Walkers appreciate it as a waypoint on coastal rambles rather than a destination in itself.

The site appears to be free and accessible year-round, though you'll want to check locally about access before visiting. Allow half an hour if you're just passing through, longer if you're genuinely curious. From either Roselands Caravan Camping Park or Lands End Camping & Glamping, it's close enough for a morning expedition before heading to the beaches or pursuing other Cornish archaeology.
