Trebah Beach

You descend through a tunnel of subtropical plants - ferns, tree ferns, palms - and suddenly the beach opens up below you in a sweep of golden sand and turquoise water. Trebah is properly dramatic, this steep wooded valley leading down to a hidden cove that feels almost Mediterranean despite being solid Cornish coast.

The walk down takes about ten minutes through the garden itself, which is half the charm. It's lush, overgrown in the best way, with enough exotic planting that you forget you're in England. Then you hit the sand and the light changes. The beach itself is fairly compact - a horseshoe of sand backed by high cliffs - but that's what makes it special. It doesn't sprawl. It feels contained, intimate.

Walkers will love the coastal path connections, and families with older kids will manage the descent fine, though it's steep enough to be a proper workout on the way back up. Younger children might struggle with the return journey. Allow two to three hours if you're actually swimming or settling in with a book.

Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the summer crush. Parking is limited and the approach road is narrow - arrive after 11am in July and you'll be queuing.

Based 5-6 miles away, The Secret Garden Glamping and Stay Wild both offer solid bases for exploring this stretch of coast. Trebah works well as part of a broader beach-hopping day - it's close enough to Helford River and other Falmouth-area attractions to combine sensibly.
