Trebah

Trebah beach sits at the end of a rather magnificent subtropical garden that tumbles down a steep ravine to the shore. You park at the top and walk through groves of tree ferns, bamboo, and rhododendrons before emerging onto a sheltered cove with pale sand and turquoise water that looks frankly un-British.

It's genuinely one of Cornwall's loveliest beaches if you can handle the descent. The path is well-maintained but doesn't pull punches - roughly 200 steps down means a proper climb back up, which rules out very young children or anyone struggling with mobility. Factor in at least forty minutes each way if you're not particularly fit.

The beach itself is small and crowded in summer, which rather defeats the purpose of the gardens above it. Visit early morning or after two o'clock if you want breathing room. Swimming is safe enough, though there can be a swell depending on conditions.

What makes Trebah worth the trek is the combination - you get coastal drama plus botanical oddness in one trip. The garden was planted in the 1830s and the rare plants genuinely do thrive here thanks to the microclimate. Admission covers both garden and beach access.

For families, realistic expectation: young kids will manage the walk fine but might only want thirty minutes on the beach before it's time to head back up.
