Town Wood

Town Wood sits on Penrith's doorstep, a proper bit of ancient woodland that rewards a proper wander. The trees here are old - properly old - and the paths wind through beech and oak in a way that feels like you've stepped out of the town centre and into something altogether quieter. It's a straightforward walk, nothing technical, but the canopy is thick enough that it feels genuinely remote even when you're only minutes from the high street.

Historically, this was common land, which matters if you're the type who cares about how English places have been shaped. The woodland itself is what you're after though - dappled light, the smell of damp earth, and enough space to let kids run without losing them entirely. Most people get through it in an hour or so, depending on how slowly they meander. There's no entrance fee or visitor centre nonsense, which is refreshing.

If you're based at Howdy Glamping just up the road, Town Wood works as a morning exercise before heading elsewhere, or a late afternoon stroll to kill time before supper. It's also close enough to Crossfells Campsite to make a proper leg-stretcher for campers who've been sitting in a tent. Penrith itself has enough museums and independent shops to fill an afternoon, so slot this in as your green-space break rather than your main event. Worth the detour if you're staying nearby, but not worth driving across Cumbria specifically to see.
