Tower Hill

The walk up Tower Hill is a proper slog if you're not expecting it, but the effort pays off with views across the Sussex Weald that stretch for miles on a clear day. You're looking south towards the South Downs, north across rolling farmland, and on good visibility you can pick out the cathedral spire at Chichester below.

It's not a technical climb - more a steady trudge through woodland with increasingly open vistas as you gain height. The summit itself is fairly modest, just a grassy hilltop with a few benches, but the landscape context makes it worth the visit. Walkers will get the most out of this one; kids might find the climb tedious unless they're decent walkers already.

Allow a couple of hours return from the car park, though you can make it quicker if you're fit. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper boots are sensible. There's no charge to access it, and the car park at the base is free.

If you're staying at Bow Hill Farm just down the road - that excellent caravan site near Chichester - Tower Hill makes a natural half-day excursion. It's close enough for an afternoon walk without eating into a whole day. Best visited outside school holidays if you want any peace and quiet up top.
