Totton & Eling Heritage Centre

The Heritage Centre in Totton tells the story of this corner of Hampshire through objects, photographs and documents that locals have actually cared enough to preserve. It's a small operation, the kind of place where someone's genuinely interested in what they're showing you rather than reading from a script.

You'll find bits of industrial history - Totton was proper working-class, with railways and engineering works - alongside domestic life from a century or more back. This works best for people with a real interest in local or industrial history. Kids might manage half an hour, but don't expect them to be transfixed. It's not flashy. What it does well is show you how ordinary people lived and worked here, which is often more interesting than the grand stuff if you're paying attention.

If you're camping at Ashurst Campsite, it's just a short drive away - worth an hour or so on a rainy afternoon. Combine it with a proper walk in New Forest National Park, six miles on, which is where the real draw is for a week away. Matley Wood Campsite sits between the two if you want to base yourself there instead. Check opening hours before you visit, as smaller museums can be unpredictable with their schedules.
