Tottiford reservoir

Tottiford Reservoir isn't dramatic - no plunging cliffs or fairy-tale ruins - but it's precisely that quiet, unshowy character that makes it work. The path loops around the perimeter, giving you proper close-ups of the water and whatever's nesting or passing through on migration.

This is a reserve for people who actually want to see wildlife rather than just photograph it from their car. Bring binoculars and patience. Winter brings wigeon and teal; spring is about warblers and ducks settling in. Summer's gentler but still productive if you're up early. The walking is manageable - nothing steep, though you'll want proper shoes as it can get boggy after rain.

Family groups can do an hour here and call it done; serious birders lose three hours without noticing. There's no café or visitor centre, so come prepared with a flask. Free access, as far as I can tell, though the reserve operates on the honour system.

Newton Abbot sits just a few miles south, making this an easy add-on if you're based nearby. Oakmoor Touring Park, a couple of miles away, suits adults wanting a quieter base for exploring the area. Tottiford itself isn't spectacular, but if you're into your wildlife and don't mind a bit of wind coming off the water, it delivers.
