Torrnam Freumh

Torrnam Freumh isn't a name that trips off the tongue, but the summit itself does the talking. You're looking at a proper hill walk on the Isle of Arran, rising to just under 700 metres and offering views across the Clyde and towards the mainland that justify the slog up. The ascent is relentless but straightforward - no technical climbing, just genuine legwork through moorland and occasional rocky sections. Most people allow three to four hours for the round trip from the car park, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. The reward isn't just the view, though. On a clear day you can pick out Goat Fell and Holy Isle from up here, and if you're lucky, the Mull of Kintyre bleeding into the distance. The peak itself is unremarkable - a cairn and some wind - but the landscape all around is unmistakably Scottish and genuinely moving. Go early to avoid weekend crowds, and bring proper waterproofs. The weather can turn on Arran faster than you'd expect. This is honest hill walking rather than anything fancy. Families with older kids will manage it fine; toddlers will find it tedious. Worth the detour only if you're already on the island and not just passing through.
