Torrachilty Forest

The River Conon tumbles through a deep gorge here, and that's really what draws people to Torrachilty Forest - not the trees themselves, but the dramatic water and the walk that follows it. It's a proper Scottish Highland scene: steep banks, rushing water, and paths that wind along the riverside with enough ups and downs to keep you honest. You're looking at maybe an hour or two depending on how far you venture, and it's the sort of place where the air smells green and the sound of water never quite leaves you.

This works brilliantly for walkers who want something more rugged than a stroll but aren't after a full fell day. The route near Strathpeffer is accessible enough for reasonably fit families, though the terrain can be boggy in places and proper boots help.
