Falls of Orrin

The River Orrin drops hard through a wooded gorge just outside Strathpeffer, and it's one of those Scottish waterfall spots that rewards a proper walk without demanding mountaineering skills. You'll find yourself in deep forest - Douglas firs and birch - with the water thundering below, and the whole thing has that satisfying wild quality you get in the Highlands when you're just far enough off the main road.

The walk down takes maybe twenty minutes through trees, and it's steep enough to keep things interesting but not punishing. The falls themselves aren't enormous, but the power of them is genuine, especially after rain. What makes it worthwhile is the remoteness of the spot - you could easily have it to yourself on a weekday.

Families with older kids and reasonably confident walkers will enjoy this one. Younger children might find the descent tricky, and buggies are absolutely out. Plan on an hour and a half total, longer if you're the type to linger and take photos. There's no entrance fee and no facilities at the site itself, so bring what you need.

It works well paired with a stay at either Beauly Holiday Park or Highland Heights Luxury Glamping - both are within easy striking distance. The area has plenty of other walks if you're basing yourself nearby, so it's worth combining this with exploring Strathpeffer itself, which has its own charm as a Victorian spa town. Not Instagram-famous, but absolutely worth the detour if you're already in the region.
