Tornamean

The walk up Tornamean isn't long, but it punches above its weight. Rising just over 300 metres near Banchory, this peak offers proper views across Aberdeenshire's rolling landscape and, on a clear day, reaches toward the distant Cairngorms. It's the kind of hill that rewards you without demanding hours of your time.

From the summit, you're looking across farmland and forest, with the Dee Valley laid out below. The ascent itself is straightforward - moorland and grass underfoot, nothing too technical. Allow an hour to ninety minutes return from the car park, which makes it ideal if you've got restless teenagers or younger kids who need a quick win rather than a full day's expedition.

Walkers will get the most from Tornamean, particularly those based at Banchory Lodge or Silverbank Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite nearby. Both are solid bases for exploring this corner of Aberdeenshire, and the peak sits well within a wider walking itinerary. If conditions are poor, mind you, the moorland exposure can feel windier than you'd expect for the height.

There's no charge for the walk, and no facilities at the summit - bring water and something to eat if you plan to linger. Midweek mornings see fewer people, which matters little up here but keeps the car park less chaotic. It's worth doing, particularly if you're staying locally and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full-day expedition. Not dramatic enough to plan a trip around, but genuinely worthwhile if you're in the area.
