Banchory Golf Club

An 18-hole course perched above the River Dee, Banchory Golf Club commands proper views across Aberdeenshire's rolling farmland. The layout winds through mature trees and open fairways - nothing too brutal, but it demands respect. Shot-making matters here. Greens are well-maintained and play firmer than many Scottish courses of its age, which keeps things interesting even when the weather's dreich.

You'll get the most from a round if you're a competent golfer. Beginners might find the course unforgiving; it's not designed to flatter. The clubhouse sits at the top of the property with a decent bar and food service - worth lingering over a drink post-round. Banchory town itself is small and quiet, about 25 minutes from Aberdeen, so there's a genuine escape feel to it.

Membership runs through the club, but day visitors are welcome subject to availability - ring ahead rather than turning up. Green fees aren't cheap (mid-range for Scottish courses), and you'll need a handicap certificate or to prove competence. Allow four and a half hours for a full round.

If you're staying at Banchory Lodge Caravan Park or Silverbank, both just down the road, the club sits handily for a long weekend. The River Dee Walk loops nearby if your playing partner wants fresh air instead of golf. Fine spot if you've got your swing sorted, less compelling if you're still finding your way round a course.
