Top Wood

Top Wood sits just outside Ballymena in Mid and East Antrim, a proper forest walk that feels genuinely removed from the town bustle despite being minutes away. The woodland paths wind through dense beech and mixed deciduous trees, with enough elevation change to work your legs without being a proper hike. The canopy's thick enough that even on wet days the underfoot stays reasonably dry.

It's the kind of place that suits walkers after a solid couple of hours outdoors without the commitment of a full moorland trek. Families with kids aged eight-plus will manage the terrain fine, though it lacks the dramatic views or specific attractions that younger children often crave. Birdwatchers and anyone after a bit of forest peace will genuinely enjoy it. The woodland floor's carpet of moss and fallen leaves makes it atmospheric rather than dramatic, which is honest.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared for a straightforward woodland experience. Allow two to three hours if you want a proper wander rather than a quick circuit. Spring and autumn are when it really comes alive - the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely worth timing your visit around.
