Top Pool

The water at Top Pool sits perfectly still most mornings, reflecting the sky like polished glass. It's a proper working quarry lake near Hinckley that's become something of a local secret for anyone wanting a decent walk without the crowds you'd find at more famous Midlands spots.

You can circuit the whole thing in about forty minutes at a leisurely pace. The path's well-maintained and flat enough for most abilities, though it gets a bit muddy after rain. Birdwatchers absolutely love it here - cormorants, herons, the odd kingfisher if you're lucky and quiet. There's a bench or two if you fancy just sitting and watching the water for a bit.

Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though honestly there's not much to do beyond the walk itself. Older children who actually care about nature will get more from it. The main thing is you can get some proper peace and quiet, which is rarer than you'd think around here.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - 5 Ways Lakes is closest at just over four miles away - this makes an easy half-morning diversion. Meadow Field and Eriba Glade are only slightly further. Pop over, do the circuit, grab a coffee back in Hinckley. It's not spectacular, but it's a solid little break from the caravan without needing to plan a major trip out.
