Top Field Light Railway

A narrow-gauge railway in the Norfolk countryside, Top Field Light Railway is the sort of place where steam enthusiasts and families with young kids actually enjoy themselves together. You'll find it east of Norwich, and it's a proper working line with vintage trains that putter along through genuinely lovely rural landscape - the kind of view that makes you understand why people move to Norfolk and never leave.

The trains themselves are the draw. These aren't full-size heritage railways, but smaller gauge lines that somehow feel more intimate. You climb aboard actual vintage carriages and rattle through fields and woodland for however long the journey takes. Children under ten tend to be entranced; teenagers will find it a bit slow unless they're seriously into railways.

Allow a couple of hours including the journey and a wander around the station itself. There's something wonderfully unpretentious about the place - no gift shop theatrics, just trains doing what trains do. Check ahead for operating days and times, as these smaller attractions aren't always open every week.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Bylaugh Country Park or Top Farm Campsite are both within a few miles - this works well as a half-day outing. It pairs nicely with exploring Norwich itself, which is genuinely worth a proper day. On a grey Norfolk afternoon, watching steam rise from an old locomotive feels rather special.
