RAF Oulton (Former)

There's not much left to see at RAF Oulton these days, but if you're into aviation history or just keen to spot the remnants of wartime Britain, the old airfield east of Norwich is worth a quiet afternoon drive. During the Second World War, this was a proper working station - Avro Lancasters and other heavy bombers took off from here on operations across occupied Europe. Now it's mostly fields and scattered concrete, the kind of place where you can stand and imagine the roar of engines that once filled the Norfolk sky.

You won't find much in the way of facilities or formal interpretation - this isn't a museum or visitor attraction with opening hours and admission fees. What you get instead is the chance to walk around the perimeter, spot the old runways breaking through the grass, and maybe catch sight of one of the former hangars if you're lucky. It's the sort of visit that appeals to military history buffs and aircraft enthusiasts rather than families after a day out. Most people give it an hour at most, maybe less if the weather's grim.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Top Farm Campsite is closest at just 2.6 miles away, with Moat Island Glamping and Deer's Mead also within easy reach - it's a useful spot-fill on a day when you fancy getting out but aren't up for a proper hike. Norwich itself is close enough for a bigger day out, but RAF Oulton works best as a quiet, reflective detour for those who care about what happened here.
