Toot Hill

The walk up Toot Hill from Swindon takes about forty minutes, and it's properly rewarding. You're climbing just 275 metres, so it's not exactly Alpine, but the views back towards the town and across the Wiltshire plains make it worth the trudge up the slope.

What strikes you first is how bare it feels at the top - exposed, windswept, with that particular kind of emptiness you get from chalk downland. There's an Iron Age fort here, though honestly the earthworks are subtle enough that you won't spot much unless you know what you're looking at. The real draw is the vantage point itself. On a clear day you can see for miles, and Swindon sprawls away beneath you like an actual town rather than the concept of one.

This suits walkers far more than casual visitors. You need to be prepared for it - proper boots, water, the lot - because once you're up there you're committed. Kids might get restless if they're not keen on hiking; younger ones would struggle with the ascent. But if your family enjoys a decent moorland walk, it's genuinely good.

Parking is at the base near the monument, and there's no charge. Allow a couple of hours return including time at the top to actually enjoy the view rather than just gasping for breath. It pairs well with a stay at Park Farm Campsite nearby - gives you a proper day out without needing to travel far from base.
