Tomen Y Mur Roman Fort

You're standing on a windswept hillside above Blaenau Ffestiniog, looking at what amounts to a series of grassy bumps and ditches. This is Tomen Y Mur - a Roman fort from around 80 AD that's been left to the elements for nearly two thousand years. The Romans built it to keep an eye on the slate-rich valleys below, and if you squint at the earthworks, you can actually make out the fort's layout: the ramparts, the ditches, the gate positions. It's archaeology without the museum-glass barrier.

History enthusiasts will find this properly rewarding, especially if you've got even a basic knowledge of Roman Wales. Casual visitors might wonder why they've trudged uphill for what looks like old bumps, but that's precisely the point - this isn't polished or interpretive. It's raw.
