Tom Soilleir

Tom Soilleir rises 2,370 feet above the Cowal Peninsula, a proper hill rather than a mountain but one that rewards the effort with views that stretch across the Firth of Clyde on a clear day. From Dunoon, it's an accessible scramble for anyone with decent legs and a couple of hours to spare - the route isn't technical but it's steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the summit.

Walkers get the most from this one. There's no visitor centre or café, no paths marked with interpretive boards, just you and the Scottish landscape. The ascent is straightforward if unrelenting, and the descent takes it out of your knees more than the way up. On a decent afternoon you might see across to Bute and the Clyde estuary, though honestly, Scottish weather being what it is, you're just as likely to emerge above the cloud line and see nothing but grey.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Glenfinart is closest at just under two miles from town - Tom Soilleir makes a solid half-day outing. Loch Eck Caravan Park, four miles away, offers a good base if you're planning several walks in the area. The hill suits families with older kids who don't mind a bit of a slog, but younger children will likely find the relentless gradient tedious.

It's free, naturally. Allow two to three hours return. Go on a day when the forecast actually looks promising - a clag-covered summit is genuinely not worth the leg work.
