Peaton Hill Conservation Reserve

Peaton Hill Conservation Reserve sits just outside Dunoon, a proper working landscape rather than a manicured visitor attraction. What you're getting here is a chance to walk through woodland and open ground that's being actively managed for wildlife - think native trees, rough grassland, and the occasional surprise if you're lucky with timing. The reserve itself isn't vast, so you won't need half a day, but it's the sort of place where an hour or so reveals more the slower you move through it. This works well if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Glenfinart is barely three miles away, and Hunters Quay Holiday Village even closer at five miles. Pop over for a ramble before heading into Dunoon proper for lunch. The paths are fine for families with older kids, though little ones might find it a bit dull if they're after playgrounds. What makes it worth the detour is that it feels genuinely quiet. No crowds, no café, no gift shop. Just woodland and whatever you happen to spot. Winter and spring are probably your best bets wildlife-wise, though it's decent enough year-round if the weather holds. From Stratheck or Loch Eck parks you're looking at under ten minutes' drive. Bring wellies - it can get boggy - and don't expect any facilities once you're in.
