Walk into Tod Law and you're straight into proper Northumberland forest - dense conifers, dark undergrowth, the kind of place where it actually feels like you've left Newcastle behind, even though it's only a handful of miles away. The woodland tracks here are straightforward enough for most abilities, though the ground gets boggy in patches after rain, so decent boots are non-negotiable.

It's the sort of forest that appeals more to walkers than casual strollers. You won't find benches or interpretation boards; this is just trees, space, and quiet. The paths wind through the canopy in a way that feels genuinely remote despite the city being close by. In autumn the light's particularly good - that golden stuff filtering through the branches that makes you wish you'd brought a camera that doesn't have a tiny sensor.

Family groups with kids who can manage a couple of hours on foot will enjoy it. Younger children might find it a bit samey after the first mile. Serious hikers will see this as a useful link in the Border Forest area rather than a destination in itself.

Free access, no formal opening hours that I'm aware of - typical forest land. Allow two to three hours for a decent circuit. It works well as a morning outing if you're staying at Border Forest Holiday Park or the glamping pods nearby - both within striking distance. Come in late spring or early autumn when the midges are less mental.
