Heathery Hill

Heathery Hill cuts a proper fine silhouette from the Newcastle side of Northumberland, and the walk up there rewards you with views that stretch across the moors in all directions. It's not a lung-bursting slog - manageable for most fitness levels - but the path gets moorland-boggy in places, so decent boots are non-negotiable.

What you get at the top is the real draw: on a clear day, you're looking out over rolling heather and gorse, with the industrial sprawl of Newcastle falling away behind you. The hill itself isn't dramatic or towering, but that's rather the point. This is moorland country, quiet and genuinely wild-feeling despite the city not being far off.

Walkers will find real value here, and families with older kids who don't mind a muddy tramp will get on well with it. Photographers should come in autumn when the heather blooms purple, or after rain when the light gets properly moody. You won't find facilities at the summit - not even a trig point - so bring water and a packed lunch if you fancy sitting up there.
