Tod Knowe

The walk up Tod Knowe rewards you with proper views across Northumberland's rolling moorland - nothing fancy, just honest landscape that stretches for miles. It's a straightforward peak to bag near Morpeth, the sort of thing you'd do in a couple of hours without breaking a sweat.

The summit isn't dramatic. There's no stone cairn or trig point theatre here - just you, the wind, and the satisfaction of being up there looking down. On a clear day you can make out the Cheviot Hills to the west, and the whole Northumbrian countryside unfolds beneath you like a crumpled green blanket.

Walkers will find this properly rewarding, especially if you're the type who likes accumulating peaks without the Alpine drama. Families with reasonably fit legs will manage it fine; young children might find it a bit of a slog depending on the route you take. It's not the sort of place to linger for hours though - an hour or so at the top and you'll have seen everything worth seeing.

If you're based at Whitton Glebe Caravan Park just a few miles away, this makes for a solid morning or afternoon expedition. Free to visit, naturally - there's nothing to pay. Go when the weather's cooperating; mist rolls in quick on these moorlands and renders the whole thing pointless. Spring and autumn are your best bets, when the light's proper and the crowds stay away.
