About Toby's Wood
It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Longleat Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is three miles away, or Center Parcs Longleat Forest if you want a bit more infrastructure. Families with younger children will get a solid hour of running around out of it. Older kids might want something with more purpose, though dog walkers absolutely come back here.
The wood doesn't require advance booking as far as I can tell, and there's no entrance fee. It's free access walking country, which is refreshing. Go midweek if you can - weekends pull in enough people that the peace gets a bit thin. Best in spring when the bluebells are doing their thing, or autumn when the light comes through properly golden. Winter's fine too if the ground isn't waterlogged, but you'll need decent boots. Nothing fancy, but it's genuinely pleasant and takes the edge off a park-based week when you want ten minutes away from facilities.
