Tober Park

The walk into Tober Park takes you through proper woodland, the kind where the light filters through in sheets and you can actually hear yourself think. It's a nature reserve just outside Ballymena, and it's one of those spots that feels genuinely wild despite being close to town.

What you're getting here is a mix of native woodland and open grassland - good for spotting birds if you're into that sort of thing, and the paths are reasonably well-marked without feeling over-managed. The reserve has a real sense of space to it. On a quiet morning you might see roe deer; the insect life is decent too. It's not going to blow your mind with dramatic vistas, but that's rather the point. This is low-key exploring, the kind where you notice moss on tree trunks and listen to birdsong instead.

Walkers will get the most from it - bring binoculars if you're a birdwatcher. Kids can manage it fine, though it's not a destination with adventure playgrounds or attractions. Plan on an hour or ninety minutes depending on which paths you take. It pairs well with a stay at Sunset Glamping four miles away - the glamping site scores brilliantly, and having a nature reserve nearby means you're not entirely dependent on the weather for entertainment.

Go in spring or early autumn when the bird activity picks up. The reserve is free to access, though check ahead for any seasonal closures. It's a proper tonic if you want woodland without the crowds.
