Tisbury Methodist Church

The red-brick Methodist chapel on Tisbury's high street is one of those Victorian churches that you'd walk past a dozen times without really clocking it - until someone tells you to look up. Built in the mid-1800s, it's a proper working church that still hosts a congregation, so you can't just wander in whenever you fancy, but on a Sunday morning it's worth timing your village walk around. The interior is modest but genuine - no flashy restoration, just straightforward Victorian piety with decent stained glass and that unmistakable smell of old hymn books and beeswax.

Tisbury itself is a handsome market town about eight miles west of Salisbury, the sort of place you stumble upon when exploring the Nadder Valley properly rather than bombing down the A30. The church sits comfortably among the Georgian and earlier buildings that line the high street, and the whole village has that feeling of having simply got on with things for three centuries without needing to shout about it.

It's really for people interested in Victorian nonconformism and local history rather than architectural showstoppers. If you're staying at Marshwood Farm Camping or Chalke Valley Camping nearby - both excellent spots - and you're spending a morning pottering around Tisbury's antique shops and tea rooms, the Methodist chapel is worth a look from the outside at least. Check service times in advance if you want to see inside. Don't expect grandeur, but do expect authenticity.
