Chiselbury Hill

The walk up Chiselbury Hill pays off the moment you crest the top and Salisbury Plain spreads out below you in all its chalk-white glory. It's a proper workout if you're coming from the Salisbury side, but the views across Wiltshire make it worth the huffing and puffing. The hill itself has Iron Age fort remains - ramparts and ditches that still hold their shape after two thousand years, which gives the whole thing a bit of weight beyond just being another bump in the landscape.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll, and the terrain can be boggy depending on recent rainfall, so proper boots are essential. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip including time to sit at the top and actually take in what you're looking at. The views stretch for miles on a clear day - you can see towards Stonehenge if conditions are right. If you're after a gentler walk, this isn't it. But if you like a climb that rewards you with genuine views and a slice of Iron Age history underfoot, Chiselbury delivers.

With Marshwood Farm Camping and Chalke Valley Camping both just three miles away, it's an easy half-day excursion from a park base. You could combine it with a morning in Salisbury and still have time to explore the town's cathedral before heading out. The hill works well as part of a walking itinerary across the wider chalk downlands - it's substantial enough to feel like an achievement without eating up your entire day.
