Tingley Field Plantation

The woodland here stretches across a proper chunk of Hertfordshire, a few miles east of Henlow, and it's the sort of place that rewards an aimless wander far more than a rushed visit. Ancient trees, open glades, the occasional boggy patch where the ground squelches underfoot - it's working forest rather than manicured parkland, which means it feels genuinely wild despite being only a stone's throw from civilisation.

Walkers will find the most to enjoy here. The paths wind through mixed woodland, and in spring the floor comes alive with bluebells. There's no visitor centre or cafe, so you're not paying for the privilege of fresh air, but equally there's no infrastructure either - come prepared with decent boots and an ordnance survey map if you're venturing off the main tracks.

Historyheads might be intrigued by the plantation's age, though information boards are thin on the ground. What you get instead is the chance to properly disconnect, to hear birdsong, to spot deer if you're quiet enough and lucky enough.

Family groups with older kids will manage fine here; younger ones might lose interest after forty minutes.
