Timber Hill

Timber Hill is one of those walks that sneaks up on you. From Chertsey, it's not far at all, yet most people drive straight past without realising there's a proper peak tucked away in the Surrey countryside. The summit itself sits at a modest height, but what makes it worth the trip is the woodland walk to get there - the sort of route that feels like you've actually gone somewhere, even though you're still within spitting distance of the town.

The path meanders through thick trees and opens into clearings with decent views across the surrounding landscape. On a clear day you can pick out the Thames valley stretching out below. It's not alpine drama, but it's a genuine vantage point, and that matters. The walk takes roughly an hour to the summit and back, depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath on the steeper bits.

Families with kids aged eight and up will find this manageable. Younger ones might struggle with the climb, and you'll want proper shoes because the path gets muddy after rain. It's free to access, which helps when you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Chertsey Caravan Park or Warren Farm Home Park.

Go mid-week if you can. Weekends draw dog walkers and local runners, and the narrow bits can feel crowded. Early morning is best - the light through the trees is lovely, and you'll likely have the summit to yourself. It's not a destination in its own right, but combined with exploring Chertsey town or walking the Thames Path nearby, it makes for a proper morning out.
