Tilgate Park

The lake at Tilgate Park catches you off guard. You're expecting woodland walks around Haywards Heath, and instead there's this proper body of water with waterfowl everywhere - swans, coots, the lot. It's a 50-acre nature reserve that feels far larger than it actually is, mostly because the paths wind through different habitats: open water, woodland, meadow. You get a real sense of compartments rather than one flat park.

Walkers will find the most to do here. The trails are straightforward without being dull, and the bird spotting opportunities are genuine - bring binoculars and you'll see something. Children will enjoy the open spaces and the chance to feed ducks, though don't expect rides or playgrounds. It's quiet rather than eventful. The woodland sections offer proper shade on hot days, which matters more than you'd think in Sussex.

Families staying at Worth Forest Glamping or Sunset Tree Camping nearby have an easy drive here - under five miles. It works as a morning stop between activities elsewhere, or a dedicated afternoon if you're serious about wildlife watching. The reserve is free to access and generally open dawn to dusk, though facilities can be sparse depending on the season.

Best visited outside peak holiday times. Summer weekends bring families in numbers, which rather defeats the point of coming somewhere peaceful. Autumn is genuinely lovely - migration season means more bird variety. Worth the detour if you're staying locally and want something low-key and genuinely natural rather than managed attractions.
